Be Extra Careful This Friday The 13th. ...Enhanced Threat for Fire Spread Today... The relative humidity values will continue to drop into upper 20s to low 30s this afternoon, with occasional southwest wind gusts of 20 to 25 mph. This will help dry the fine fuels some through the day. As a result, there will be an enhanced threat for fire spread today. For more information about wildfire danger, burn restriction, and wildfire prevention and education, please visit your state forestry or environmental protection website.

Today marks the 12th anniversary of Firefighter Kevin Apuzzio's line of duty death. Let us honor East Franklin’s very own for his heroic actions. Never forgotten and always with us. Rest easy, brother.

When a person is given the chance to live on this earth, you have one opportunity to leave your impact on this world and it’s your choice whether it be a positive or negative. So many people in this world take life for granted, not the man I am about to describe to you from this point forward. Kevin Apuzzio, born in Union Township, NJ chose from day one on this earth that he wanted to shine his light in a positive way and lead by example. Kevin was an alter boy at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Union, where he was always trying to follow in the path of God. Kevin was a Volunteer EMT with the Union Twp. Emergency Medical Unit, where he rode countless nights at the squad protectingthe members of his community. As soon as Kevin completed his High School Diploma, he moved onto Rutgers University and choose to major in Criminal Justice and Psychology, with aspirations of becoming a Police Officer. While in his early years at Rutgers University, Kevin obtained a job with the Rutgers University Emergency Services as a FF/EMT and put to use his past experience, to now aid his fellow students in times of need. Kevin later was led to join a Volunteer Fire Department, called The East Franklin Fire Department, in an effort to further his abilities in helping protect lives and property. Kevin had the type of personality you always wanted to be around, he lit up a room with his smile and exemplified what a world class citizen is. He would give you the shirt off his back and the last bit of change in his pocket. April 11th, 2006 to some was just another day, to Kevin and those that knew and loved him, this would be a day we would never forget. On this day, the East Franklin Fire Department responded to a working Structure Fire at 36 Whittier Avenue with a reported entrapment. As always with a can and will do attitude, Kevin got onto the fire engine and sprung into action, with the intentions to save a life. Kevin and his crew went into the burning building, through the smoke and located the victim. Kevin and his crew were making their way out of the smoke and flames, but unfortunately not everyone went home this day. Kevin Apuzzio tragically lost his life in the Line of Duty, doing exactly what he loved to do and that was protecting life and property, trying to keep the community safe. He may not physically be with us today, but his spirit is and will “Always be by our side.” 12 years later, the men who were directly involved give a seminar wherein they travel all over the State of New Jersey, giving their 1st hand accounts of that day and what they learned, in an effort to teach the younger firefighters that you need to “Train as if you and your partners life depend on it.” We ensure that everyone knows Kevin’s story and what he stood for. Kevin was well-trained, smart, honest, caring and dedicated his life to serving others. Today we will not mourn Kevin’s death, but celebrate his life, what he stood for and what his memory continues to do for others. April 11th, 2018-12 Year Celebration of Life of FF Kevin Apuzzio, we will never forget you brother!

The Everyday Hero CT volunteer firefighter recruitment campaign (the Connecticut Volunteer Workforce Solutions team led by the Connecticut Fire Chiefs Association and the IAFC - International Association of Fire Chiefs), in partnership with Hebron Fire Department volunteer firefighter and New York City-based cinematographer Matthew Troy, today launches “See You Out There,” a recruitment public service announcement that brought some Hollywood to Connecticut one weekend last August during three days of production. The PSA can be seen beginning today via social media and other online platforms, television, and various partnerships. Designed to increase awareness and visibility for the volunteer firefighter shortage in Connecticut, 30-, 60-, and 90-second versions of the PSA include captivating footage and visually groundbreaking moments as well as feature fire personnel from 16 different departments, including at least one from every county in Connecticut. Our thoughts are with the York City Fire Department and the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) who lost a few of their own. Zachary Anthony and Ivan Flanscha died yesterday after a building they were operating in collapsed on them in York, PA. Last night, Michael R. Davidson succumbed to his injuries while working a 5-alarm fire in Manhattan. Rest easy brothers, and God bless their families.
