Fire Company Members Attend Hands On Driving Course
Sunday, May 23, 2010
-
Seventeen members of Hillsborough Fire Company # 3 (Station 38) participated in a hands on driving course at the Hillsborough Middle School. The course was run by RVESCUE, LLC of North Branch. The day consisted of two sessions in which each member drove each piece of apparatus through an obstacle course and performing activities ranging from from simple maneuvers like parallel parking to evasive maneuvers.  Fortunately the weather held off and all members had a great time.

This course has been implemented into the fire company's updated General Operating Guidelines, mandating that every driver take a behind the wheel course once every three years, as well as an up to date classroom CEVO course in order to remain an active driver. Much thanks goes out to instructors Matt Hoffman and Billy Apsley, the Hillsborough Township Board of Education for letting us use the parking lot, Hillsborough Township Department of Public Works for letting us borrow over 100 road cones, and the Hillsborough Rescue Squad for letting us borrow a tent in case of inclement weather.

Standby For Continental Flight # 9
Sunday, May 9, 2010
-
The Hillsborough fire district, along with other fire and emergency services departments around the county, was dispatched to standby for a commercial airliner who was flying low and dumping fuel. Continental Flight 9 had left Newark at 11:25 am bound for Narita, Japan. After circling and dumping fuel for 45 minutes over large portions of Hillsborough Township and Franklin Township, the flight landed safely back at Newark around 12:15 pm without incident. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that Continental Flight 9 returned to Newark Liberty International Airport owing to a hydraulic problem and that circling and dumping fuel before landing is a standard practice to lighten an airplane’s load to achieve a safe weight for an emergency landing.
